Why do some diabetics need sugar while others avoid it?
Diabetics need to manage their blood sugar carefully, but their approach depends on the situation:
1. Needing Sugar (Hypoglycemia) – Some diabetics, especially those on insulin or certain medications, can experience low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if they skip meals, exercise too much, or take too much medication. When this happens, they need quick sugar sources (like glucose tablets, juice, or candy) to raise their blood sugar back to a safe level.
2. Avoiding Sugar (Hyperglycemia) – On the other hand, many diabetics, particularly those with Type 2 diabetes, need to limit sugar intake to prevent high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Consistently high blood sugar can lead to complications like nerve damage, kidney disease, and heart problems.
The key is balance—diabetics don’t necessarily have to avoid sugar completely but must monitor and control their intake based on their blood sugar levels and treatment plan.
